A retired Minden High School teacher was killed in a crash Saturday in Bienville Parish.

Bronwyn Smotherman, 56, died in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 20, Louisiana State Police said.

State troopers say the crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on I- 20 just east of La. Hwy. 151.

According to police, a preliminary investigation reveals that a 2006 Toyota Avalon driven by 66-year-old Gregory Smotherman of Minden was traveling east on I-20 when it exited the roadway, went down an embankment and crashed into trees.

Troopers say Gregory Smotherman was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and suffered moderate injuries. His passenger, Bronwyn Smotherman, was also wearing her seat belt but did not survive her injuries.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bienville Parish Coroner.

Troopers say they do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash. However, a toxicology sample was taken from Gregory Smotherman and will be submitted for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
