“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
— 2 Timothy 4:7
Mr. Curtis Walker, Jr., indeed kept the faith and lived a life marked by courage, wisdom, and devotion to service. A proud veteran, he served his country in the United States Air Force for 28 years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, and achieved the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. For his bravery and commitment, he earned many commendations and military awards, including the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Bridges of Understanding – Beyond the battlefield, Mr. Walker dedicated himself to building bridges of understanding. For over 28 years, he worked as an active-duty Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Race Relations Instructor in the U.S. Air Force, championing fairness and equality. After his military retirement, he continued this mission for an additional 19 years as a federal service civilian employee, impacting countless lives through his wisdom and teaching in the United States and abroad, particularly in Europe. While in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Walker earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, demonstrating his commitment to growth, education, and life-long learning.
Guiding Light – Although military injuries left him legally blind, Mr. Walker never allowed this challenge to define him. His resilience, strength of character, and talent for writing became guiding lights to those around him. He was a keen observer and a prolific writer of experiences and humanity. His writings, including the many poems he shared, lay witness and legacy to his unforgettable presence. He was a man whose voice of kindness, counsel, and encouragement touched all who knew him. His poem, Forever, and his writing, The Porch, are shining examples of his vivid words. In his poem Forever, Mr. Walker wrote of infinite spirituality and kindness. In his chronicle The Porch, he painted a picture of his visits to Minden, Louisiana, from his perspective that “… a notion of love and caring, seemingly, is all about … the porch is not only a place from which to observe, but it is also an education. And I would be remiss if I did not add, each visit has been more enjoyable than the previous one. Minden, Louisiana, thanks!”
Love of Family – Mr. Walker resided in Frisco, Texas, and was never without love of family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Elizabeth Walker. He leaves behind a son, Timothy Allen Greene, and daughter-in-law Pamela Denise Edwards, Frisco, Texas. He was welcomed as family by his caregivers, especially Yolanda (Texas), and embraced by the community of Minden, Louisiana, especially the Edwards family and Winford Street friends, and by all who stood proudly beside him. In their care and fellowship, he found not only support but also belonging.
Legacy & Acknowledgments – Mr. Walker was laid to rest on September 12, 2025, at Springhill North CME Church Cemetery, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, with a graveside service that included United States Air Force Honor Guards, a Lowe-McFarlane American Legion Post 14 (Shreveport) tribute reading and salute, the solemn American flag-folding ceremony with presentation to the family, the playing of Taps, a military rifle salute, and remembrance tributes from family and friends.
