Record crowd attends Hungerfest fundraiser for UCAP

by Amber McDown

A record crowd turned out for the United Christian Assistance Program’s annual Hungerfest fundraiser on April 9 at First Methodist Church, marking what organizers described as the largest attendance in the event’s history.

Hungerfest, one of UCAP’s two major fundraisers each year alongside its charity golf tournament, featured a dessert auction and a “poor man’s supper” of soup, crackers, and tea. Community members gathered for the meal before bidding on desserts donated by local cooks, with proceeds supporting UCAP’s mission to assist residents in need.

Funds raised from the event help provide food, rent and utility assistance, clothing, and emergency short-term lodging for individuals and families facing hardship in the Minden area. UCAP operates solely on donations and has helped thousands of people in the community since its founding.

“This is awesome! This is the most people we’ve ever had!” said Charlotte Jones.

“Even without knowing how much we’ll raise, just seeing this kind of support from the community means so much,” added Kevin McCann.

Organizers said the strong turnout reflects continued community support for UCAP’s efforts to help those experiencing financial difficulties get back on their feet.

Residents who were unable to attend the event can still contribute to the organization. Donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 314, Minden, LA 71058, and community members may continue supporting UCAP’s ongoing programs throughout the year.
