Search warrant leads to recovery of stolen handgun, arrest of Minden man

by Minden Press-Herald

A Minden man was arrested June 6 after Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives recovered a handgun reported stolen earlier that day during the execution of a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of Austins Road.

According to a Sheriff’s Office report, detectives obtained and executed a search warrant after investigating the reported theft of a firearm from the Austins Road residence. The victim told investigators that Lish Island, 54, of Minden, was believed to be staying at the residence and was the only person present when the firearm disappeared.

When detectives arrived at the property at approximately 9:23 AM, they found the entrance gate locked and were forced to cut the lock to gain access. Investigators made contact with Island in the yard and advised him of the search warrant and his Miranda rights.

During a search of the mobile home, detectives entered a back bedroom where a television and lights were on. According to the report, officers found two handguns hidden beneath a blanket on a bed.

One of the firearms, a Makarov 9mm pistol, was identified as the handgun reported stolen earlier that day. Detectives also recovered a Jericho 9mm pistol, which had not been reported stolen.

Investigators noted that Island is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms.

Although Island denied staying at the residence, detectives reported that he was the only person present at the time the warrant was executed. Investigators also cited statements from a family member indicating Island had been living at the home. Additionally, detectives found a receipt bearing Island’s name in the bedroom where the firearms were recovered. The receipt was dated June 4, two days before the reported theft.

Island was arrested and transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.

He was booked on charges of illegal possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
