Shongaloo man arrested for burglary, property damage

by Minden Press-Herald

A Shongaloo man was arrested last week on multiple charges, including burglary and property damage, following an incident in which he allegedly forced his way into a residence and made threats against the occupant.

According to the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on March 18 to a property damage complaint in the 200 block of Highway Alternate 2. The complainant reported that Samuel Varnado, 52, had kicked in the front door, damaged several items inside the residence, and threatened him with a stick, stating he would “beat his ass” after being evicted from the property.

A video provided to deputies reportedly showed Varnado approaching the residence shortly before the damage occurred. Following the investigation, warrants were issued for Varnado on charges of simple criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, simple burglary, and aggravated assault.

On March 22, around 10 AM, a deputy spoke with a witness who stated he had purchased the property where Varnado previously lived and was aware that he had been staying there intermittently. The witness granted deputies permission to search the property.

Authorities located Varnado asleep in a shack on the premises. He was arrested, read his rights, and transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center. During questioning, Varnado admitted to kicking in the door and entering the residence to retrieve food but denied making threats or causing further damage.

Varnado was booked on the previously issued charges and remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
