Spencer Creech awarded Congressional Silver Medal for exceptional volunteerism

by Amber McDown

In recognition of his outstanding achievements in volunteerism, character development, and fitness, Spencer Creech, a 16-year-old homeschool student, was honored with the Congressional Silver Medal on January 12 in the offices of Minden Mayor Nick Cox. The ceremony took place in the presence of notable figures, including Kathy Babers from Speaker Mike Johnson’s office, Mayor Nick Cox, State Representative Dr. Wayne McMahen, State Senator Adam Bass, and Col. Carl Thompson.

Established by the United States Congress in 1979, the Congressional Award aims to acknowledge initiative, service, and achievement among young individuals. Participants like Creech earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold Certificates and Medals by setting and achieving goals in voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration. The program is open to youth aged 14 to 24 nationwide.

Having previously earned the Bronze Medal, Creech has now added the Silver Medal to his accomplishments and is actively working towards achieving the prestigious Gold Medal. Kathy Babers expressed pride in Creech’s dedication, stating, “It’s a lot of work, and we are just so proud of him. This is a big deal.”

Creech’s commendable 314 hours of volunteer service included cleaning tombstones of veterans, donating essential items to children, sending birthday cards to veterans, and participating in community cleanup efforts.

State Representative Dr. Wayne McMahen acknowledged Creech’s commitment, stating, “Obviously, you’ve set and met your goals, and that will serve you well throughout your life. A Congressional Silver Medal, at your age, is quite an accomplishment. We’re proud of you.”

State Senator Adam Bass commended Creech for his care for the community, saying, “To hear some of the things you’ve done for people, even something as simple as picking up trash, shows you care about your community, and you care about people. I’m proud of you.”

Spencer Creech’s dedication to service and his achievements at a young age have earned him well-deserved recognition, marking a significant milestone in his journey towards the Congressional Gold Medal.
