Community members gathered along MLK Drive on Monday, January 19, for an Ecumenical Unity March held in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, continuing Minden’s 39th annual MLK observance themed “Lift every voice. Live every dream.”
The march included members of the MLK Celebration Committee, community leaders, elected officials and local residents, who paraded the length of MLK Drive while singing and praising. Participants paused at intersections to join hands and offer prayers, emphasizing unity, faith and reflection as central elements of the observance.
Organizers said the march served as both a public witness and a time of spiritual reflection, honoring Dr. King’s legacy of nonviolence, equality and collective responsibility. The event was one of several activities scheduled throughout the day in recognition of Dr. King’s life and work.
“The 2026 Unity March was a beautiful start to today’s MLK Day celebration activities. Great participation of community members,” said Fayrine Kennon-Gilbert, chairperson of the MLK Celebration Committee. “As we marched, sang, and prayed, we emphasized the need for Unity. Dr. King’s life mission was to bring Unity and equality to mankind. It is up to us to continue the legacy and bring to life the dream Dr. King so eloquently and powerfully shared. It is up to us to continue to be the drum major for peace, unity and equality.”
Organizers said the march reflected the spirit of the holiday by bringing together people of different backgrounds to walk side by side, reinforcing Dr. King’s message and encouraging continued service and cooperation within the community.
