Webster Parish Police Jury approves agenda, discusses hospital funding

by Amber McDown

The Webster Parish Police Jury met for its regular session on Tuesday, August 5, at the Webster Parish Courthouse Annex, with all members present except Daniel Thomas of District 3. All items on the agenda were approved unanimously.

During the public comments portion of the meeting, attorney Nicole Frey of Breazeale Sachse and Wilson LLP spoke to the jury in reference to the certification of the parish’s agreement with the Local Hospital Assessment Plan for 2025.

Frey explained that progress is underway for the Louisiana Department of Health to approve funds for Webster Parish and praised the parish’s legal counsel for negotiating favorable terms.

“Attorney Jackson has gotten rid of the parish’s indemnity,” Frey said. “It deletes the indemnity that this parish would be obligated to provide the state. That is a great thing that your attorney asked for and the state was willing to provide.”

Frey said the parish will enter into provider agreements with Medicaid providers at local hospitals using the Local Hospital Assessment Plan and Medicaid program.

“I just wanted to express our gratitude and thanks to this parish for the help you’re providing Springhill and Minden Medical,” she said.

Other business included the approval of invoices for payment pending review by Juror LaTanya Grigsby on Friday, August 8; the adoption of the July 1 Road Committee, Finance Committee, and Regular Meeting minutes; the reappointment of Michael Corely and Todd Pickard to the board of Sarepta Fire District #5 for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2026; and the authorization to call for a public hearing regarding a resolution to hold elections in Road Districts A and B to consider the continuation of ad valorem taxes.

“This is just a renewal for taxes for roads,” said Police Jury President Jim Bonsall.

Also approved were the 2024 audit of financials for the Webster Parish Police Jury. Jennie Henry, CPA with Allen, Green, & Williamson, presented the audit, which received a clean opinion with no requested changes or instances of non-compliance.

The next meeting of the Webster Parish Police Jury is scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, at 10:30 AM in the Police Jury Meeting Room, 401 Main Street, Minden. The public is encouraged to attend.
