Dr. Robert Brooks Van Horn, Jr. was a native of Minden, current resident of Baton Rouge and longtime resident of Northern Virginia passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at Baton Rouge General Bluebonnet due to complications from long term diabetes at the age of 73.
Brooks graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a PhD in Statistical Analysis and worked professionally with the government and defense contractors as a Senior Technical Analyist with TRW. Dr. Van Horn was selected as one of the first Technical Fellows by the Space and Defense Sector of TRW. He was a leader in command, control, and communications for battle management, and designer of the allocation and assessment model for the Department of Defense Worldwide Military Command and Control System.
Brooks is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen Norman Van Horn; son, Dr. Robert Brooks Van Horn III and his wife Genta Van Horn and their children, Margaret and Brooks IV of Seattle, WA; his daughter, Katherine Van Horn Schmidt and husband Dr. Micah D. Schmidt and their children, Darby, Andrew, Noah, Daniel, Matthew and Benjamin of Fairfax, VA; his mother, Emily Prothro Van Horn of Baton Rouge; sister, Emily Van Horn Wilbert and husband, John W. Wilbert, Jr. of Plaquemine; and brother, Mark D. Van Horn and wife Toni Dufour Van Horn of Cape Coral, FL. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Robert B. Van Horn. A private Celebration of Life service will be held for family due to Covid restrictions.
