City unveils Letters to Santa mailbox at Friday press conference

The City of Minden unveiled its new Letters to Santa Mailbox during a Friday morning press conference on November 21, introducing a dedicated spot for children to send their Christmas wishes directly to Santa Claus.

Mayor Nick Cox said the idea came from Santa himself, who contacted City Hall requesting a special mailbox for Minden. Cox said Santa told him, “Their letters are thoughtful, funny, and full of imagination. I want to make sure that I hear from every child who lives in the City of Minden.” Cox added, “When Santa asks you to do him a favor, you do it,” before revealing the full-sized, post office–style mailbox painted red and white with gold trim. The mailbox now stands outside the City Hall entrance near the utility payment area.

“Look at this mailbox; it’s beautiful. It represents the Christmas spirit. It also represents craftsmanship but, most importantly, it represents community,” Cox said.

Contributors recognized for their work included Patony Morrow, who donated the mailbox; Perryman Welding for metal restoration and paint work; Jordan Tanner for graphics; Tracy Campbell for installation; Morris Busby for gold trim and lock; and Sarah Overall for decoration of the surrounding area.

Santa and Mrs. Claus also attended the event. “I want all the boys and girls to know that any mail that goes into this box I will see,” Santa said. “If you’ve been no-so-good, well, Mrs. Claus reminds me that nobody’s perfect.” Santa encouraged children to keep writing, adding, “Bring those letters on in here. The reindeer are ready, the sleigh is ready, I’m ready, and the elves are busy.” He thanked the mayor and contributors and noted he looked forward to seeing families at upcoming holiday events.

The city’s Christmas in Minden celebration is scheduled for December 12–13, with the tree lighting on Friday and the parade on Saturday. Santa will return for the festivities. Cox said the city hopes every child will participate. “We want every child to bring their letters and drop them in this mailbox,” he said.
