Community College bill passes Senate Education Committee

by David Specht

BATON ROUGE — One step closer to reality. House Bill 89, Rep. Wayne McMahen’s bill to to allow Northwest Louisiana Technical College to become a technical community college, passed out of the Senate Education Committee without objection Thursday.

“I thought we had already done this,” said Sen. Michael Walsworth, R-West Monroe. “This is just one of those things that fell through the cracks.”

Walsworth offered the motion to report the item favorably out of committee. “I think anything we can do to expand the technical college system is good,” Walsworth said. “There are some great people in Minden.”

The bill is expected to be considered by the full Senate sometime next week. If passed, it will head to the governor’s desk.
