Council on Aging launches annual fan drive to aid seniors

by Amber McDown

The Council on Aging has launched its annual summer fan drive to provide relief for local seniors without air conditioning, according to Outreach Director Karen Guice.

The drive began May 1 and will continue through the hot summer months. The agency is seeking donations of box fans or monetary contributions to purchase fans for distribution to seniors in need.

“Every summer we have many seniors who do not have air conditioning in their homes, and they depend on a fan for their comfort,” Guice said. “As you know, it gets really hot here in our area, so we try to contact various organizations and businesses to request a contribution of a box fan, or several fans, or a monetary contribution for fans, and then we can purchase them for our seniors to use.”

The Council on Aging serves residents age 60 and older. Seniors must complete the required paperwork to receive a fan.

“We have many calls each year and work to meet as many needs as possible,” Guice said.

Contributions can be made directly to the Council on Aging and will be accepted throughout the summer.
