An historic season for the Glenbrook Lady Apaches came to an end Saturday.
Glenbrook, the No. 2 seed, fell to No 14 seed St. Frederick 4-1 in the semifinals of the select Division IV playoffs at the LHSAA Softball State Tournament in Sulphur.
The Lady Apaches finished 24-7. The Lady Warriors (21-13) will play No. 1 seed Riverside Academy for the championship Sunday.
Glenbrook made it to the state tournament for the first time sine joining the LHSAA in the 2021-22 school year. The Lady Apaches won the District 1-1A championship with a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Cedar Creek.
Saturday’s game was the final one for shortstop Gabi Brown, who has been instrumental in the Lady Apaches’ success since joining the school joined the LHSAA.
Brown was Glenbrook’s lone senior so it won’t be a surprise if the Lady Apaches return to Sulphur next season.
Glenbrook had some opportunities Saturday, but hits were hard to come by off St. Frederick pitcher Camille DeGravelle. She allowed four hits, struck out four and walked three.
Glenbrook freshman Savannah Mangrum turned in a solid performance in a pressure-packed situation. She allowed six hits, struck out three and walked six.
St. Frederick took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Glenbrook tied it in the bottom of the second.
Kynzie Smith drew a walk with two outs, stole second and scored on a single by Anna Grace Vining.
The Lady Warriors loaded the bases with no outs in the third on consecutive walks. But Mangram limited the damage to one run. She induced a groundout, got a strikeout and induced another groundout to end the inning.
Eliie Earnhardt led off Glenbrook’s fourth with a single. Chloe Gregg singled with one out, putting runners at first and second. But DeGravelle struck out the next batter and induced a popout to end the threat.
St. Frederick scored the game’s final two runs in the sixth on back-to-back doubles and an error.
Smith led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. Addison Chanler drew a walk with one out. But DeGravelle caught a line drive and turned it into a double play to end the game.
DeGravelle also had a good game at the plate, going 2-for-3. Sophie Domonkos went 2-for-4 with a double.
