Homer woman arrested after alleged shoplifting incident at Minden Walmart

by Minden Press-Herald

A Homer woman was arrested January 23 after allegedly failing to scan dozens of items at a self-checkout register at Walmart, according to Minden police.

Officers were dispatched to the store in the 1300 block of Homer Road at 9:05 PM in reference to a reported theft. Store loss prevention personnel told officers a woman in the self-checkout line had not scanned multiple items. An officer monitoring live security footage provided a description of the suspect, who was later stopped after passing the final point of sale and escorted to the store’s loss prevention office.

The woman identified herself as Tomun Burns, 45, of Homer, using a Louisiana driver’s license, police said. After being advised of her rights, Burns initially denied the allegations. However, video footage reportedly showed her failing to scan numerous items. Police said Burns later admitted to not scanning between 30 and 40 items.

Officers said a stolen item was also found inside her backpack. The merchandise included a variety of food items and children’s toys. In total, Burns allegedly failed to scan 73 items with a combined value of $533.58.

During a warrant check, officers learned Burns also had two active warrants through the Minden Police Department. She was taken into custody on the theft charge and the outstanding warrants.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
