Kids enjoy Engineering Week at Webster Parish Libraries’ Discovery Camp

by Amber McDown

It’s Engineering Week of Webster Parish Libraries’ Discovery Camp, and kids had fun on June 25 at the Minden main branch building paper airplanes and designing drop-proof containers for eggs..

The morning session, led by Kaitlyn Taylor, children’s coordinator, began with children learning to make a specific airplane design. The kids then competed to see which airplane could fly the longest distance.

In the afternoon, Aubrie Stahl, teen coordinator, facilitated a group of teens in designing containers that would protect an egg from an eight-foot drop, using drinking straws, wooden skewers, and tape. Various designs were tested, with most successfully passing the challenge. Alas, Stahl’s own design did not survive the drop.

Webster Parish Libraries will host different engineering-related activities throughout the week at various branches. Mathematics Week, the final week of Discovery Camp, will take place July 1-6.
