Lakeside FBLA steps up with successful “Soles for Souls” shoe drive

by Amber McDown

Lakeside Jr/Sr High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter recently wrapped up its successful “Soles for Souls” shoe drive, collecting an impressive 814 pairs of shoes. This effort aimed to raise funds to support students’ participation in regional, state, and national FBLA competitions.

The collected shoes, a mix of gently worn, used, and new footwear, will be processed through the Funds2Orgs network. This organization partners with micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries, empowering them to build and maintain small businesses. The funds generated from the sale of these shoes will provide essential resources like food, clothing, and housing for the entrepreneurs and their families.

Lesa Ward, FBLA sponsor at Lakeside, expressed her gratitude for the community’s support. “We really appreciate the community helping us out,” Ward said. “We raise money for our students to attend various competitions throughout the year.”

FBLA, a career and technical student organization (CTSO), prepares students for careers in business. With a mission to “inspire and prepare students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences,” FBLA has over 196,950 members in more than 5,200 chapters across the United States and internationally.

Lakeside High School stands out as the only public school in Webster Parish that regularly participates in FBLA competitions. However, these opportunities come at a cost. Last year’s national conference in Orlando cost each student $2,500. This year’s National Leadership Conference, to be held in Anaheim, California from June 29 to July 2, is anticipated to be even more expensive. Lakeside’s FBLA welcomes donations to help students attend and compete, giving them invaluable experience and a chance to showcase their skills on a national stage. Those interested in contributing can contact Lesa Ward at the school for more information.
