LSU AgCenter highlights Monzingo in Extension spotlight

by Amber McDown

The LSU AgCenter continues its Extension spotlight series by recognizing John Monzingo, assistant county agent serving Claiborne and Webster parishes, with a focus on agriculture education and youth livestock programming.

Monzingo, who has served in Extension for eight years, works as an assistant county agent and serves as the point of contact for 4-H livestock programs in Webster Parish.

In this role, Monzingo supports agricultural education efforts and youth development through the 4-H Youth Development Program, while also assisting producers and community members with horticulture-related needs.

“My passion for agriculture began long before I officially joined 4-H,” Monzingo said.

Monzingo said a background growing up on a small family farm with horses and cattle helped shape an early interest in agriculture. Influences also included his father, who worked as an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor.

“I frequently accompanied him on home visits with his students and spent many hours helping in his school greenhouses, growing tomatoes and poinsettias,” Monzingo said. “Agriculture has always been a part of who I am.”

He joined 4-H in the fifth grade and credited mentors, including Robin Bridges, Dora Hatch, Mike Dixon, and Charlene Carver, with helping guide his path into Extension work.

Monzingo specializes in horticulture and 4-H livestock programming in Webster Parish, where he works with youth to develop agricultural skills and knowledge.

“I enjoy educating others and helping them gain the knowledge and confidence to succeed in their agricultural pursuits,” Monzingo said.

Looking ahead, Monzingo said his efforts will focus on strengthening the local livestock program through partnerships and outreach.

“This year, I am excited to continue strengthening the Webster livestock program by collaborating with local FFA chapters, conducting school visits, and hosting a livestock interest day,” he said.

Additional plans include partnering with Dr. Williams and the Webster Parish Library to introduce a seed library in Webster Parish, aimed at increasing community access to gardening resources and promoting local food production.
