The LSU AgCenter is continuing its employee spotlight series by highlighting K’Lanie Gordon, assistant 4-H youth development agent serving Webster Parish.
Gordon joined the AgCenter in February 2024 and works with local youth through the 4-H Youth Development Program, focusing on leadership development, life skills, and hands-on learning opportunities.
“As the 4-H Youth Development Agent, my job is to help young people learn new skills, have fun, and grow into strong leaders,” Gordon said.
Her responsibilities include visiting schools to lead 4-H club meetings and overseeing programs such as Shooting Sports, Cooking Club, and Junior Leaders. She also helps organize events and coordinates opportunities for youth to participate in camps, contests, and service projects.
Gordon said her connection to 4-H began at a young age and influenced her decision to pursue a career in Extension.
“I was inspired to join the Extension team because I actually grew up in this program,” she said. “I still remember all the opportunities 4-H gave me — the leadership experiences, friendships, and the valuable life skills I learned along the way.”
She added that her mother served as her 4-H agent, further shaping her interest in the field.
“My mom was my 4-H agent when I was younger, and I always thought she had the coolest job. And honestly … I still do!” Gordon said.
Gordon specializes in youth development programming, including coordinating school clubs, managing Shooting Sports, organizing 4-H Summer Camp, and leading Cooking Club and Junior Leaders initiatives. She said her goal is to provide opportunities where young people feel supported and encouraged to explore their interests.
“What I enjoy most about serving my community is getting to know all the amazing kids in our parish,” Gordon said. “The best part is seeing someone start out quiet and shy and then grow into a confident, outgoing leader.”
Looking ahead, Gordon said she hopes to expand awareness of 4-H opportunities among older students in Webster Parish.
“One goal I want to work on this year is spreading the word about 4-H to more junior high and high school students,” she said.
Gordon noted that 4-H offers a range of opportunities, including scholarships, travel, service projects, and leadership experiences, and she hopes to ensure more students are aware of those benefits.
