For decades, Minden residents had no local hospital, forcing seriously ill patients to travel to Shreveport for care. By the early 1920s, the need had become urgent. Thanks to the determination of Dr. C. M. Baker, Dr. S. F. Martin, Rev. Frank Tripp, and supportive community members, the Minden Sanitarium opened on December 9, 1926. Built through local bond funding, the four-story, 80-bed facility offered advanced services for its time, including surgery, x-ray, and maternity care.
Over the years, the hospital expanded and modernized, adding new operating rooms, emergency services, intensive care, nursery facilities, and patient rooms. In 1973, it was renamed Minden Medical Center. Major construction projects in the late 1970s and early 1980s increased capacity and enhanced services.
Ownership transitioned several times through national healthcare systems, while the hospital continued to earn recognition for quality, safety, and patient satisfaction — including multiple “Top 100 Hospitals” awards and national performance honors.
Since 2000, MMC has invested millions in expansion and modernization, including a Heart & Vascular Center, rehabilitation services, outpatient clinics, and ICU additions. In 2018, Allegiance Health Management acquired the hospital, continuing its commitment to rural healthcare excellence.
Recent milestones include the opening of Minden Family Diagnostics (2023), the Minden Medical Clinic of Haughton — a $6.7 million multispecialty facility (2025), and a complete renovation of the Heart & Vascular Center with new state-of-the-art cath lab technology.
Today, Minden Medical Center is a 92-bed acute care hospital supported by more than 630 healthcare professionals, providing advanced cardiac care, a 12-bed ICU, integrated behavioral health services, and 24/7 emergency care — continuing a legacy built by the vision, generosity, and determination of the Minden community.
